Literature Text

I was nine, I think, when an older boy from my neighborhood pointed one afternoon to a local man walking down our block and informed me that as a prisoner of war in Korea the man first had been starved by his captors and then offered only hamburger which, the man supposedly was told by his captors, had been mixed with ground glass. Ravenous, the story went, the man had eaten the meat nevertheless. In digestion the glass had caused thousands of tiny cuts to the insides of his intestines, I was told, wounds that had not healed, that could not ever heal, and that so long as the man lived would never stop bleeding.

"He has to wear a Kotex pad on his asshole!" the boy insisted.

He laughed.

I had, and I have, no idea if the story was true.

It haunted me.
